CHAPTER TWELVE

After I left Phist’s room, I remembered that I was supposed to call Lev, but I didn’t feel like talking, so I just sent him a text telling him I was all right. He responded that he was glad to hear from me, that he had been getting worried. I told him I’d talk to him the next day.

I climbed the steps and headed towards my room. I walked past Gina’s room, and she was in there with a bottle of flavored vodka, and her eyes and nose were red and puffy. Tess was in there with her. Gina saw me and got up and slammed the door.

Okay, whatever.

I went into my room and shut the door. I lay down on my bed and stared at the ceiling.

I wanted to cry, too. I figured that was the appropriate response to the dumpster fire that was my life. But there weren’t any tears. Nothing was there. I felt scooped out, hollow inside. I rolled over on my side and hugged one of my pillows.

I lay like that for a while.

At some point, there was a knock on my door.

“What?” I said.

“It’s Tess, can I come in?”

I sighed. I’d half-hoped it was Phist for some stupid reason. I thought maybe he’d come by and… what? Apologize?

Yeah, right.

I didn’t think Phist did apologies.

“Whatever,” I said. I was lying with my back to the door, and I didn’t even turn around to see her. I heard the door open and close, and then I felt the weight on my bed when she sat down on the edge.

“You all right?” she said.

“Yeah, fine.” I forced myself to sit up on the bed and smile at her. “I was just napping. I didn’t sleep well last night.”

“Gina’s sorry,” said Tess.

I scoffed.

“No, she is,” said Tess. “She’s not as bad as she comes off, not really. She’s very insecure deep down.”

I rolled my eyes. “Oh, fine. Everyone’s got an excuse for being an asshole.”

Tess spread her hands. “That’s fair. I get it. Gina can be hard to take. I think she has a thing for Phist, and she’s jealous. Before you showed up, I think she was really intent on trying to get with him.”

“Oh,” I said. I studied my knuckles, feeling sick to my stomach. “I guess Phist has been with all the girls in the Circle.”

“Phist is different,” said Tess.

I looked up at her.

“He never hooked up with people much,” said Tess. “If he was at a party, and the other guys put pressure on him, he’d join in, but he never sought girls out much. And he was probably nice to her at some point, because he’s been nice to me. If I hadn’t had something going with Abbadon, I probably would have liked him too. You’re lucky that he’s so into you.”

I leaned my head back against the headboard of my bed. “Yeah.”

“I bet he won’t let you out of his sight at the Horn Party. The whole point is for people to have new experiences with new people, but Phist doesn’t act like he’s ready to let you go.
